Know your campus. Before orientation, check the map online. Look where your classes will be. Find places like the library, student centre and cafeteria. Most South African universities like UJ and TUT have campus maps on their websites.

Bring your documents. You need your ID, acceptance letter and maybe your matric results. Some places also ask for proof of payment or bursary letters. Keep them in a folder so you don’t lose anything.

Check your student email. Universities like UNISA and UWC send info to your student email. You get updates about orientation, classes and bursaries. Make sure you log in and read your messages.

Know your fees. Before orientation, understand your tuition and other costs. Look at application fees, registration fees and accommodation costs. You can find fee details on University Hub.

Ask about bursaries. Orientation is a good time to ask about funding. NSFAS, Funza Lushaka and other bursaries help with fees. You can also ask about private bursaries or scholarships.

Join WhatsApp groups. Many first-years join student groups before orientation. You get tips, updates and meet people early. Some universities share group links on their websites or social pages.

Dress simple and smart. Orientation is not a fashion show. Wear something clean and comfy. You might walk a lot or sit in talks. Bring a pen and notebook too.

Be ready to listen. Orientation has talks about rules, safety and student life. You learn how to use the library, register for classes and find help. Pay attention and ask questions if you don’t understand.

Make friends. Say hi to people. Everyone is new and nervous. Talk to someone next to you. You might find a study buddy or roommate.

Stay calm. It’s okay to feel lost. Orientation is made to help you. Staff and senior students are there to guide you. Take your time and enjoy the start of your journey.

What if I feel shy or scared before orientation?

That is normal. Many students feel shy at first. You do not have to talk to everyone. Just smile and listen. You can write down questions and ask them later. If you feel too nervous, talk to a student advisor or someone from the campus help desk. They understand and want to help you feel safe and welcome.

University is a new chapter. If you prepare a little before orientation, you feel more ready and less stressed. You don’t need to know everything. Just start with these ten things and you’ll be okay.
